Had a little time down MSTW this afternoon late on, bumped into David Morison which is always nice 🙂 Pretty quiet really, with small numbers of the usual suspects. Was at MSTW hoping to catch a glimpse of the SEO recently seen by Dave R over last few days. David and I split up and he saw the SEO in closest bed to works at the bridle path end and I was at other end of site and saw nowt! Rain rain rain

  Hardly fit for any birding this weekend,after torrents of rain.I’d packed sandwiches last night but they never saw the light of day,oh well,they’ll be fine for work tomorrow (peanut butter and tabasco sauce-I mean you gotta try it-awesome!). By lunchtime we decided to pop round to the Three Gables for Sunday lunch.A roast dinner for a fiver was lovely.Afterwards we drove down to the white bridge in town to look at the river,it was on the rise,and it continued to lash it down.If anybody mentions hosepipe bans… I was just contemplating plans to build an ark,when it stopped.Destination Marston.Didn’t … Continue reading Rain rain rain

Gib 22 04 2012.  On the drive over I stopped off at Threekingham,where there were 37 fieldfares in a field just off the main road.Odd swallows flew over,not often these two species meet each other.A bit further on a barn owl hunted beside the road at Bridge End.One of the first birds I saw at Gib. was a short eared owl,hunting on the old saltmarsh.A sight for sore eyes. A few warblers showed,chiffys,willows and my first whitethroat of the year. Marston STW 22/4/12 am

Went for a few hours this morning, bumpt into me mate Steve Godson and although not brimming with birds we saw a bit! A walk down Viking way produced good numbers of lively and noisey Wrens, pic below … Plenty of seeming already paired off Reed Buntings seen as well, pic below … Cuckoo heard loud and clear from the wood across the field to the right or Viking Way on more than one occasion but none seen 😦 Plenty of Chaffinches, Blue and Great Tits seen along the Viking Way too. An hour @ Marston STW

After walking along the river at Syston village to see if I could see the Kingfisher I caught fleeting when last there again (did not see it this time!) I decided to call into Marston hide for an hour before calling to pick up my daughter and grandson. Marston,a nice hour this afternoon. Thought it was about time for a few migrants,so I checked all the surrounding fields.There were some wagtails on one of the fields along the approach road,it had been set with spuds recently and the birds were popping in and out of the deep furrows.It was difficult to get an accurate count,but there were probably 50 white/pied wagtails.Some were definately of the subsp.alba.There were at least 6 yellow wagtails,all males,brilliantly vivid colour against the dark earth.I would expect these numbers to rise over the coming days.Chaffinches,linnets,meadow pipits and skylarks were also in the field.
