Raven

I found a lone Raven on new territory today close to Marston STW, I’ve had them many times as overflying birds both over the STW reserve and nearby Jericho woods but this is the first occasion I’ve had one settled, Looks a good area for it to stay too. Also of interest today, I had a single medium sized wader battling the head wind over Hough on the Hill, no idea what it was as I didn’t have optics with me. Continue reading Raven

Interesting weekend birding @ home.

We had the pleasure of looking after our Grandson this weekend so only birding to be done was going to be at home. It started on saturday with the usual suspects visiting; Goldfinches, Greenfinches, Blackbirds, Starlings, House Sparrows, Dunnocks, a Robin, Jackdaws, the odd Chaffinch, Crows, Blue and Great Tits but then I saw two small shapes make their way along the trees bordering the school which my garden backs onto, these two shapes turned out to be the first 2 Goldcrests I had ever witnessed in my garden, not there for long mind but there never the less! Went for Kingfishers & found a Hobby!

Decided to take my one man portable bird hide to the river witham at Syston this afternoon to see if I could catch a Kingfisher at a place where I had seen the fish a few times in the past. Got all set up, see photo below of my view and so began the wait and wait and wait! Target area was a couple of over hanging branches on the opposite bank of the river. Marston STW – 1st visit for a few weeks.

I had the chance to go to MSTW this afternoon with Karen watching the Belgian Grand Prix and a little decent weather so off I went …… I parked at the works end of the site and had a pretty uneventful walk up towards the scrape and hide apart from 10 or so Corvids, a few Swallows, House Martins, Goldfinches & Greenfinches and a Wren I saw nothing all the way up Viking Way, apart from that is the infernal flies that were everywhere!
