Just coming back into town to get my car serviced this afternoon at around 1.30pm driving along the A52 near a turning to Bottesford I glimpsed what I believe to be a dead Barn Owl on the side of the road. The bird was on the side of the road heading west to Nottingham. A very sad sight to see indeed 😦 Continue reading Barn Owl road kill?
Sun was out so nipped up to Halls Hill around 4.40pm in the vain hope that I would see an SEO this time – I had not seen on up here for a while and so once in place at the Cold Harbour Lane end of the field with the lovely setting sun behind me I waited and waited. YES! after about 20 minutes – 5.02pm and 3 seconds I saw an SEO rise up over the brow of the domed hill over near the fenced off Hills and hollows part of the site, it glided majestically over the long … Continue reading SEO at last!
Had the afternoon free,so nipped down to Deeping lakes to see a roosting Long-eared owl.It was safely tucked into some thick ivy on the island.Viewable distantly from the hide.Telescope required. Continue reading Long-eared owl.
As you may be aware I am having large numbers of Lesser Redpolls in my garden on a daily basis. Today I think – no expert here folks! – that I managed to photograph, albeit thru’ my conservatory double glazing this morning on a gloomy cloudy day. Below are two images for comparison a deffo Lesser and the bird in question, a Common? I have looked at photos on the web and thru’ my books (limited collection) and feel it may well be a Common, please do post your thoughts in the post thread. Lesser Redpoll Common (Mealy)Redpoll?? I await … Continue reading Common Redpoll?
Marston. Not much about but the sound of cetti’s and water rail was a joy to hear, these two can almost be relied upon here now.A returning oyestrcatcher was new today,I had been expecting it,similar date each year.Marston year list now up to 76 sp. I was alarmed to see some habitat destruction as contractors were hacking down all the thick scrub along the railway embankment. This was an area I’d been searching for long-eared owl.No chance now. Took a few shots the other evening in low afternoon light. Continue reading Local patch this morning.
Had the chance to go to Stainby landfill this afternoon, great the days are lengthening 🙂 There was a total of 7 Red Kites about and initially they were all away from me at the far end (wire gate) end of the site and at great height also but I just waited a little and one bird in particular dropped and spent around 10 minutes close to where I was positioned. I got a few nice shots and really like the one shown below with the moon in the background, sweet! The Kites were occasionally forming a close group of … Continue reading An hour @ Stainby
American wigeon. Went back to Fiskerton fen for another go at the American wigeon, there hadn’t been alot of news but I figured it must still be around.Lincoln birder Dave Goddard was already in the hide and informed me there was a large flock of wigeon, but they were out of view.We waited quite some time before they flew back a bit nearer to us,and the Yankee doodle dandy was with them, fantastic. You need wellies if you visit, the bird is seen from the hide near the environment agency plant, the other side of the road to the reserve car park. Also here were six little egrets.Look at this hide-fantastic…. … Continue reading American wigeon 18th Feb 2013.
At the weekend I went out to see if the 3 Waxwings were still around at the small caravan park at Frieston near Caythorpe, sadly no was the answer but did see a Buzzard in the fields at the back of the caravan park, it was perched on a post for a while then off it went in the direction of the A607 towards Caythorpe. I then moved onto Marston STW to see if the Cettis and Water Rails could be seen, am still dying to get half decent shots of both species! But again this turned out ot be … Continue reading A couple of hours birding over a couple of days!
Pale Buzzard 14th Feb 2013. The beautiful pale morph common buzzard is still at Denton res.,faithful to the area near the entrance track.Managed a few more pics today, but still distant, understandably it won’t allow close approach,it’s much more wary than the half-dozen other buzzards in the area.Could do with my mate Nezzy going along with his super-duper DSLR setup.Steve,if you’re reading I look forward to seeing you putting my pics to shame.
