Following overnight mist and rain, I fancied an early morning look at the local patch hoping for a new wader or two. I could here green sands peeping as I approached the hide. There was an increase, with at least seven around. Also here was a wood sand, my last one here was in 2007.

Spadge soon arrived and we watched through the mist and murk. We both agreed on another visit after tea. Spadge said he would bring his lovely lady, Carol, remarking that the ‘raptor queen’ would find us something. And she did!, being the first to spot a marsh harrier before dusk. Brilliant. She can come again.

After checking the patch most days the last year tick for me was garden warbler back in early May, but with common sand and a brief dunlin seen, that made it four new birds in one day. Now that’s what I call patch birding.
