Freiston area 26/09/2015

Back again, becoming a second home, beautiful day. Birds seen in order of appearances. Evening high tide, got better as day went on.

Tree sparrow, a few around the car park area.

Wigeon, 80 on the lagoon, 100+ on sea at high tide.

Lesser whitethroat, one in hedge near car park.

Redshank, a few on the lagoon, early, hundreds on shore at high tide.

Little egret, about 30 on saltmarsh.

Greenshank, a dozen or so.

Knot, 300+ on lagoon at high tide. more on shoreline.

Black-tailed godwit, 400+, resting on saltmarsh, a few on lagoon.

Curlew, 200 at least,

Swallow, a few flying south.

Common buzzard, 6, all moving slowly south.

Common whitethroat, on walk towards Butterwick.

Goldcrest, on walk towards Butterwick.

Tawny owl, rare-ish for the Freiston area. Flushed from tree along old sea wall towards Butterwick- flew to branches where we were eye to eye for a minute.

Willow/chiff, one near the owl.

Oystercatcher, c.600 at high tide.

Brent geese, 75 along the tideline.

Gt crested grebe, 8 on the sea.

Gannet, 60+, mostly north, lots of juvs, some ‘arrowing’ into the water out in the wash.

Peregrine, great views in front of the seawatching hut, then perching on it’s favourite frame on the shore.

Dunlin, a few hundred, flying around at high tide and resting around lagoon.

Eiders, half a dozen, close in.

Bar-tailed godwits, a few on shore and in flight.

Grey plover, several along the shoreline and in saltmarsh.

Merlin, fantastic, prolonged display in front of the hide. Flocks of waders flushed up.

Marsh harrier, 3 separate individuals. Merlin, peg and harrier all in view at one stage.

Pink-footed geese, skein of 38 heading south, first I’ve seen this Autumn.

Arctic skua, one dark morph, north at high tide. Great visibility in the low sun conditions in the evening.

Sandwich tern, 10 fishing at high tide.

Black tern, great views, with sandwich terns.

Turnstone, a few with other waders around the lagoon.

Ringed plover, 50+ on lagoon after high tide.

Also; Feral pigeon, house sparrows, robin, mute swan, lapwings, starlings, jackdaw, blackbird, blue tit, herring gull, mallard, canada, goldfinch, teal, linnet, magpie, b h gull, woodpigeon, reed bunting, wren, great tit, moorhen, pied wag, gadwall, dunnock, meadow pipit, carrion crow, pheasant, chaffinch, long-tailed tit, red-legged partridge, cormorant, great-black backed gull, shelduck.
