Bulgarian Black Sea coast

A weeks trip to Nessebar on the Black Sea with my Wife 3 weeks ago started out well with excellent weather and plenty of birds on the Pomorie Salt Pans. However the weather deteriorated rapidly to heavy overcast and rain with temperatures of 12-13 deg. in the cold Northerly winds, at which point most of the birds went South. The only decent numbers of birds we saw after that were several flocks of Dalmatian Pelicans, consisting of hundreds of birds, all flying South past the hotel. Bulgaria would seem to be an excellent location for birding but we didn’t visit as many sites as we could have because of the bad weather and extremely hazardous driving conditions – vehicles coming towards us on our side of a dual carriageway is just one example!

A few examples of the hundreds of birds we saw in the first couple of days, the camera rarely came out after that. Click on the image for a larger version.
