Farmland birds joy

Waterwell lane, Ancaster.

Yesterday afternoon I had a drive along and noted some good birds. Most significant was a flock of corn buntings containing approximately 35 birds. This was an impressive count for the area, a few pairs breed but this is the first time I’ve seen this many. In addition to this flock, a couple of birds were singing, on territory further along the lane.

Other birds seen;

  • 3 male wheatears, on tilled field and drystone walls
  • 4 yellow wagtails
  • 5 white wagtails
  • 6 pied wagtails
  • 3 pairs grey partridges
  • 10+ pairs red-legged partridges
  • c20 stock doves
  • 30+ pheasants
  • 12 mistle thrushes
  • 2 pairs lapwings
  • at least 40 skylarks
  • 10+ linnets
  • 15 yellowhammers
  • pink-footed goose, with local greylags
  • 30+ sand martins around pool
  • a few swallows
  • 2 house martins
  • red kite
  • 3 buzzard, including a striking pale morph bird
  • The day before (Weds), Graham Welch had a male ring ouzel and a late fieldfare.
