Gales, rain, storms etc, but usually lovely and sunny in the afternoons.
No rarities, but some nice birds seen. Decent views of the barred warbler and a couple of yellow-browed warblers were obtained.
Our walks around St.Mary’s threw up plenty of stonechats with the odd whinchat.
Stopping to shelter from the hail, during a thunderstorm 5 Balearic shearwaters flew fairly close inshore, along with a great skua. From the west of the island I could pick up the (very) distant white blob which was the spoonbill, on Green island.
Lots of the birds here are very obliging, probably due to them being used to people and the lack of predators. Water rails, herons and snipe all seen at close quarters. Song thrushes, blackbirds and sparrows and the scilly wren are very tame.
A boat trip over to the underwatched St.Martin’s on a gloriously sunny day started with an arctic tern over the quay. A whinchat and a spotted flycatcher were our best finds.
